Each and every one of us human beings has what we call a soul. A soul does not take up space, does not have matter like we do, it is invisible and has no weight. In a way it is like a spirit. We cannot see a spirit no more than we can see a soul. Where do we get our soul from? We get our soul from God at the moment of conception. Without the soul we would not be alive. This soul is the part of us that God gave us to make us alive. We may have a human body and still not be alive; we would be as a dead person. So let’s say that we are given life when we receive our soul from God. We are told in Genesis 1:1 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Whenever the word soul is used, it can refer to the immaterial part of man when he is alive or after death because the soul is immortal, our body is not.
What part of our lives does the soul have to do with us? The soul is the center of our emotions, like in love, hate, joy, sorrow, passion, happiness, and etc. The soul takes care of all of our emotions of this world or this life.
When we die in this life, the soul departs from our body; the body goes into the ground and awaits the resurrection: it depends on how we lived our life here as to where our soul goes; if we lived believing in Jesus Christ, our soul will go to heaven to be with the Lord for evermore: if we lived our life not believing in Jesus Christ, our soul will go into Hell and evidently to the Lake of Fire to be separated from God for evermore.
The soul does not exist before a human is conceived. It is given by God at conception and will never die. The soul is not like God that did not have a starting point; He existed from eternity past and will exist for all eternity to the future. The soul once it becomes alive will also live for all eternity.
