Ten Commandments

Do We Still Need The Ten Commandments?

YES! We need to obey the Ten Commandments today. The Ten Commandments started back when God gave them to Moses on Mount Sinai to give to the Israelites as laws. We can find them in the Old Testament Exodus 20:3-17 and Deteronomy 5:7-21.

As Jesus preached on the Sermon on the Mount He clearly showed that His coming had not canceled the Ten Commandments; these laws originate from God and His eternal character, therefore, their value cannot change or be taken

away; they will exist as long as there is a God.

     Here is Exodus 20:3=17

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

13 Thou shalt not kill.

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15 Thou shalt not steal.

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

As Jesus preached on the Sermon on the Mount He clearly showed that His coming had not canceled the Ten Commandments; these laws originate from God and His eternal character, therefore, their value cannot change or be taken away; they will exist as long as there is a God.

Some people think that because we live in the New Testament, Church Age, or in the Age of Grace we don't have to obey them; that they were for the Old Testament only; but they are in the New Testament also. There are not listen in the New Testament as they were in the Old Testament, but they are there and here they are.

First Commandment - Thou shall have no other gods before me.

Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Luke 4"8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Second Commandment - Thou shalt not worship Idols.

1 Corinthians 10:14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

Collossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

Third Commandment - Thou shall not take the name of the Lord in vain.

Matthew 5:34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:

James 2:7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called.

Fourth Commandment - Remember to keep the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Matthew 12:8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

Mark 2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

Fifth Commandment - Honour your father and mother.

Matthew 15:4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

Sixth Commandment - Thou shall not murder.

Matthew 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness.

Romans 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Seventh Commandment - Thou shall not commit adultry.

Matthew 5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Eigth Commandment - Thou shall not steal.

Matthew 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

Luke 18:20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

Ninth Commandment - Thou shall not bear false witness.

Luke 18:20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

Colossians 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.

Tenth Commandment - Thou shall not covet your neighbour's things.

Luke 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

     Here we have the Ten Commandments from the Old Testament and the New Testament; this can be all summed up by one more verse;

Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be filfilled.

Did you take notice while reading the Ten Commandments that the first four of them were between God and us; the other six are between mankind?

Now, let us take a look at Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus said to him, thou shalt love thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
